My experience was much different from yours. I didn't feel welcome in the Latino community, neither in El Salvador when I lived there for a few years, nor here in Los Angeles. So I spent most of my teenage years and early adulthood rejecting my Latino heritage. At one point I even pretended I didn't understand when someone spoke to me in Spanish. It took me a really long time to realize that roots are roots and you can painfully reject them or embrace them and make your life easier. I still struggle with that to this day. I admire how much you embrace your heritage.
